Serv-U now supports 64-bit!

What are the advantages of using 64-bit?

Serv-U now has support for Windows 64-bit (AMD64/x64) which takes advantage of the 64-bit architecture making Serv-U run faster and more efficiently.

Serv-U stores timestamps and file sizes as 64-bit values making processing much more efficient. By providing a 64-bit build, the Serv-U File Server can run natively in this enhanced environment and provide an experience unmatched by any other 32-bit File Server.

With 64-bit servers and workstations becoming the standard in enterprise network deployments, network administrators are increasingly required to understand the differences in 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows in order to make informed decisions about server software and hardware. While it is common knowledge that 64-bit operating systems can handle more memory (RAM) than 32-bit operating systems, there are other benefits of running in 64-bit that are just as important but relegated to general obscurity.

The AMD64 standard used by both AMD and Intel addresses several deficiencies in the original x64 archtiecture. The most well-known design limit is the addressable memory limit of 4 GB. While this amount of memory is a large amount for workstations, many servers utilize far more than 4 GB of RAM when handling high-volume services. 64-bit architectures can address more memory than even the most powerful computers today make use of, eliminating this bottleneck.

In addition, x86 systems are limited by the number of General-Purpose Registers (GPRs) available in these CPUs. Registers serve the purpose of caching frequently used data for the CPU to process, and is even faster than the on-chip L2 cache. While x86 provides only 8 GPRs storing only 32-bit values, the x64 architecture provides 8 GPRs which can all store 64-bit data types for exceptional performance improvements.

These two major improvements provide enhanced form and function on x64 bit systems, directly impacting end-user service by performing requested functions faster and more efficiently than ever before.
