11-14-2007 - Restricting Access To Your AllegroSurf Server
Hello,
Welcome to another installment of the RhinoSoft.com newsletter. You are getting this newsletter because you signed up on our web site. If you would like to stop receiving these newsletters, please visit: http://www.RhinoSoft.com/newsletter/unsubscribe.asp
The intent of this newsletter is to give you some pointers on our products. This newsletter discusses configuring access lists in AllegroSurf and allowing users to connect to AllegroSurf from any location.
Creating Access Rules In AllegroSurf
One of the most powerful features in AllegroSurf is the ability to restrict who may access AllegroSurf's proxies. The reasons for doing this can vary widely. An administrator may wish only to monitor and filter network usage from a small group of users, or may need to restrict usage to remain within licensing limitations. Whatever the reason, AllegroSurf offers an easy way to control who may access its proxies. First, open AllegroSurf Voyager and browse to the "Administration | IP Ranges" tab. By default, all of the address ranges reserved for internal networks are permitted to access AllegroSurf. These entries may be removed in favor of more restrictive access rules that meet your needs.
Allowing Remote Access In AllegroSurf
Because it is possible to customize who is able to access your server, you can also choose to grant access to users beyond the standard internal IP ranges. If there are users who work in another office who also require content filtering and access management, simply add the public IP addresses that they will use to connect to your IP Ranges list and configure them to use your proxy server. If your server is behind a router using overload NAT, you will need to configure port forwarding for any proxy servers that you wish remote users to access. For example, if you have users at another office requiring a WWW Proxy Server, create a new WWW Proxy for external users on a port above 1023 and forward that port to your AllegroSurf server. Then configure the users at the remote office to use a proxy server set to your public IP address with the port you chose to forward to your server. This can be done with any type of Proxy server that AllegroSurf supports.
Using DNS4Me For Remote Clients
In many cases, it will not be possible to grant access via specific ranges of IP addresses because your clients may work from home or connect from random IP addresses. In this case, you can leverage the power of DNS4Me to allow your clients to use AllegroSurf at anytime and from anywhere! Simply purchase a DNS4Me subdomain, configure your remote clients with the DNS4Me client, and enter their domain in the IP Ranges area. Your remote clients can then be configured to use AllegroSurf's proxy servers. As long as your clients are connected to the DNS4Me service, they will be able to access the services made available through your AllegroSurf server.
