06-10-2008 - Serv-U Media Player Support & Improved Certificate Support

Hello,

Welcome to another installment of the RhinoSoft.com newsletter. You are getting this newsletter because you signed up on our web site. If you would like to stop receiving these newsletters, please visit: http://www.RhinoSoft.com/newsletter/unsubscribe.asp

The intent of this newsletter is to give you some pointers on our products. This newsletter features two new features in Serv-U 7 - improved digital certificate support and the new media player features in Serv-U.

Feature Spotlight - Built-In Media Player

With the introduction of the new HTTP/HTTPS listeners in Serv-U 7 comes exciting new possibilities in terms of file access methods. In taking advantage of these opportunities, Serv-U now includes a built-in media player accessible directly from the Basic Web Client. While Serv-U 7 has always included the ability to view image thumbnails and slide shows, it can now also stream audio and video files encoded in the WMV, AVI, MP3, MPEG, and WAV formats. Share home videos with friends and family, bring your own music to the party, or share business presentations with clients - all by leveraging the elegant power of the Basic Web Client.

To play a media file, select it in the Basic Web Client and select the "Play Media" button that will be available in the bottom toolbar. To play all the audio/video files in a folder, click on the "Play List" button. The "Previous Media File" and "Next Media File" arrows on the top of the media player can be used to skip songs or videos, and the familiar Windows Media Player interface can be used to adjust playback. Firefox users need to install a plug-in before accessing the built-in media player, and will be prompted to install the plug-in when first accessing media.

Feature Spotlight - Improved Certificate Support

While Serv-U has always supported the usage of a certificate as part of the process to encrypt FTP transfers using SSL, one of the drawbacks was that it's a self-signed certificate. A self-signed certificate does not contain the same assurance of identity as the one found in a certificate signed by a known Certificate Authority.

In Serv-U 7, we've greatly improved Serv-U certificate support. While Serv-U still comes pre-configured for use with a self-signed certificate to get people started with their secure file transfers, we've also added the ability to generate a certificate request. This certificate request can be given to a certificate authority for signing. After the request is signed, you can use the resulting certificate in Serv-U (along with the private key previously generated by Serv-U) so that it is accepted by default in FTP clients and web browsers all over the world.

Other encryption improvements we've made include:

  • Generate a private key for SFTP use from 1024-4096 bits to find the right balance between performance and security
  • Disable specific ciphers and MACs for SFTP usage according to your specific security requirements.
