Scheduling Backups With FTP Voyager Scheduler

Backing up your important files is an essential part of making sure your data remains safe and secure. Backups ensure that unexpected system crashes, virus infections, or other harmful events are only a temporary inconvenience rather than a calamity. However, many people view creating backups as an inconvenient task. Taking the time to copy files, placing them on a removable storage medium, and then testing them can discourage even the most diligent administrator. With FTP Voyager Scheduler, taking care of back-ups becomes a snap, allowing you to leverage the power of cheap online data storage to take care of backups by setting them up once and scheduling them to repeat at regular intervals.

To schedule backups in FTP Voyager, first you need to determine the storage location for your data. If you don't already have a reliable remote location for backup storage, a search for "Online FTP Storage" turns up many options. Once you have an account available on the storage server, you must configure this account in FTP Voyager in order for it to be available to Scheduler. Instructions on how this is done can be found in the following Knowledge Base article:
http://www.RhinoSoft.com/KnowledgeBase/KBArticle.asp?RefNo=1657&prod=fv

Now that you have a storage location chosen and the account available to FTP Voyager Scheduler, you can create the backup tasks and schedule. Open FTP Voyager Scheduler and create a new "Action" by right-clicking in the upper-left window pane and clicking "New". In the "Scheduled Task Settings" window, select the FTP Site Profile you created for your online storage site, then open the "Schedule" tab to determine how often you want the task to be executed. Schedules can run daily, weekly, or yearly, and can repeat on regular intervals via the "Advanced" menu. Once your schedule is set, click "OK" to continue.

Once your Action is created, you can decide what files you want to back up. You must first create a "Synchronize Remote" task by right-clicking in the upper right hand pane and selecting "New Task". Select "Synchronize Remote" first, then use the "Browse Folder" button to select which local folder you want to back up. When naming the remote folder, make sure you choose a name that accurately reflects the contents of the folder being backed up. All other options can be left in the default state. Individual items can be backed up by creating an "Upload" task instead of "Synchronize Remote". Use the "Move Up" task to delete the local source file or folder after successful execution of the task. One you are finished configuration the task, click "OK" to save it.

Once all of your files and folders are selected for back up, you can sit back and relax knowing that FTP Voyager Scheduler ensures that your backups are performed regularly. If an error is encountered during backup, it is automatically restarted. FTP Voyager's built-in integrity checks ensures that successfully transferred data is identical to the source.

Queuing Files For Transfer In FTP Voyager

A feature of FTP Voyager that is often overlooked is its ability to "queue" uploads and downloads instead of starting them immediately. Large file transfers can saturate your Internet connection and cause it to slow down as the transfers use up the majority of your connection's available bandwidth. If you're actively using other programs on your computer that rely upon the Internet, the resulting decrease in network performance can be undesirable. To avoid this, you can queue transfers to be performed later when it's more convenient.

Queuing an item for delayed transfer is easy. When you need to transfer a file or folder but don't want it done immediately, simply open the "Queue" menu and select the appropriate queue action for either an upload or download. This action can be performed multiple times to continue adding additional files and folders to the transfer queue.

Once you are ready, select "Queue | Start Queued Tasks" and your transfers are automatically executed in the order they were added to the queue.
