10-07-2008 - Serv-U Mobile Access Via iPhone & iPod Touch

The intent of this newsletter is to give you some pointers on our products. This newsletter discusses the new mobile interface for the iPhone and iPod Touch available in Serv-U 7.3.
Serv-U Client Access Goals
When re-architecting Serv-U, one of our main goals was accessibility. From a user standpoint, a File Server is only as useful as it is accessible. We wanted to ensure that users of Serv-U had a choice in how and where they access their shared resources.
This design goal is one of the main reasons for the inclusion of the Basic Web Client in all Serv-U Editions. The Basic Web Client leverages perhaps the most widely distributed platform in the world: your Web browser. Without the need for additional software installation and without restricting it to a single hardware platform, we've created a universal method of access that is familiar to the user without sacrificing performance or features. In fact, using the Web browser as the client platform also allows us to include some really cool multimedia features like slideshow picture viewing and streaming media playlists.
Serv-U On the Go Via iPhone & iPod Touch
In keeping with this design goal, the latest release of Serv-U 7.3 includes a mobile interface separate from the Basic Web Client. This mobile interface is essentially a port of the Basic Web Client created specifically for the iPhone and iPod Touch. It's a lightweight client that loads incredibly quickly and preserves the unique look and feel of a native application.
However, the client is still accessible through the built-in Safari Web browser, instead of as a native application. This allows us to update the interface much faster without requiring Apple's approval or relying upon the distribution of their iTunes application store.
The Serv-U mobile interface supports:
- Browsing, renaming, and deleting files and folders.
- A multi-lingual interface with 12 supported languages.
- Viewing supported image files, PDF, DOC, XLS, PPT, TXT, and RTF.
- Thumbnails in directory listings.
- Streaming supported audio and video files.
- SSL-secured connections through HTTPS.
Being able to access these files through your iPhone or iPod Touch's web browser offers many advantages:
- Tightly controlled synchronization support no longer restricts you from easily having access to files on multiple computers.
- Streaming multimedia support means storage space is of no concern.
- Access your Office documents without keeping a local, insecure copy on your mobile device.
