11-11-2008 - Searching For Remote Files and Folders Using FTP Voyager

Hello,

Welcome to another installment of the RhinoSoft.com newsletter. You are getting this newsletter because you signed up on our web site. If you would like to stop receiving these newsletters, please visit: http://www.RhinoSoft.com/newsletter/unsubscribe.asp

The intent of this newsletter is to give you some pointers on our products. This newsletter discusses searching for specific files contained on an FTP server using FTP Voyager and the Find Files feature.

FTP Voyager Find Files Feature

The FTP protocol itself does not define a method for searching the files accessible through a server. Therefore, it is up to the FTP client to implement a method for making this search task easy and intuitive. The Find Files feature in FTP Voyager is a great tool that can be used for finding specific files, especially if there is a large amount of files on the server accessible to a user.

If a user has numerous folders with hundreds of files it could be time consuming manually searching for a particular file of interest. There may even be certain situations where the files all have a similar naming convention making the file listings look similar to one another.

When using the Find Files Feature, there are a variety of search parameters available to you. Your options include the ability to search in all subdirectories of the target location, ignore letter case when searching for a filename, limit the search results to a specific range of dates, and also to search the target of UNIX-style links.

In addition, wildcard characters are supported by Find Files, allowing for more powerful search terms. Additional details on supported wildcard characters can be found in Knowledge Base Article #1767 located at:
http://www.RhinoSoft.com/KnowledgeBase/KBArticle.asp?RefNo=1767&prod=fv

To access the Find Files feature:
  1. Start FTP Voyager.
  2. Connect to the desired FTP site you want to search.
  3. Click on "Tools" in the toolbar (use F6 for a keyboard shortcut).
  4. Select "Find Files..." from the drop down menu.
  5. Enter your search term and choose your desired parameters to apply to the search process.
  6. Click the "Find Now" button.

The results of your search are displayed in real-time in the box below your search parameters. Different actions can be performed on each of the search results by selecting a result from the list and clicking the appropriate action.

Get - Starts a download of the selected search result. A Browse dialog is shown to choose the download location.

View - Downloads and views the selected search result with your default viewer application (usually Notepad).

Open - Downloads and opens (or runs) the selected search result using the default application defined in Windows.

Delete - Deletes the selected search result from the server (if you have permission to delete it).

If you're still manually searching for specific files and folders on your FTP server, give this feature a try! It's a powerful tool that makes your FTP transactions faster and much easier.
