The intent of this newsletter is to give you some pointers on our products. This newsletter highlights the Serv-U and FTP Voyager JV 8.0 release.

Serv-U 8.0 Enhancements

We have just released Serv-U 8.0, adding many of the new features that you have requested. It's my intent to give you an overview of some of the updates included in this new Serv-U.

Substantially Faster User Interface:

Since the release of Serv-U 7, some customers have reported slower user interface performance on certain computers. We tracked this down to Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer is used in the tray's Management Console window to allow you to configure your server. We researched where IE performs slower than other web browsers and made changes to help. Depending on your system, you may notice an improvement by as much as ten times faster.

Programmable Events:

The most requested feature that we've had is to have programmable events. Programmable events allow you to send email messages, execute an external program, or show a balloon tip when an event occurs. Some of these events include:

User Login / Logout
File Upload / Download / Rename / Delete
Directory Creation

and much more. These events allow you to know what is happening on your Serv-U server in real-time and allows you to do custom steps as needed for your particular installation. Visit this link for a complete list:

SFTP Versions 5 & 6 Support:

SFTP (via SSH2) has been improved to support SFTP versions 5 & 6. Versions 5 & 6 are not yet as popular as 3 & 4, but they are starting to gain momentum; more and more clients are starting to support these newer versions. SFTP 5 & 6 give the SFTP client more control over file attributes as well as transfers by allowing the client to control file I/O buffering and more. Along with increased SSH security options, SFTP is a great way to protect your file transfers.

In addition to the great security options provided by SFTP, SFTP can help you to eliminate most of the common FTP headaches when dealing with port mapping and firewalls both on the server and your client computers. SFTP uses a single port to transfer files and to send commands.

Customizable Login Page & Themes:

Probably the second most requested feature since the release of Serv-U 7 is the ability to change the logo on the web browser login page. This is especially important for larger organizations wanting to give client computers immediate feedback as to where they're logging in. Take your company logo, modify it to 400x100 pixels, then tell Serv-U to use it on the login page; when client computers connect, they'll see your logo instead of the Serv-U logo.

To help with international clients, Serv-U's HTML pages have all been converted to use UTF-8; a more universal standard than code pages. Since converting to UTF-8, the login page's language choice displays each of the languages natively, at the same time.

In addition to a customizable login page, we have added several "Themes" to make the user experience feel much more like the client operating system. When logging in, for the first time, from a Mac the pages look very much like a Mac application would. If desired, users may choose any theme simply by selecting the "Theme" button on any page, including the login page. For more information visit this link:

New Web Client URL Parameters:

I often finding myself wanting to give friends and colleagues links to Serv-U and have it start showing a slide show, start in thumbnails mode or immediately download a file. In addition to "user" and "password" parameters we've added the "thumbnail=1", "slideshow=1", "playlist=1", "dir=", and "file=" parameters. For example, if I want you to see the pictures in directory "/Photos/Family Photos" in a slide show, I could give you this URL:

To make it shorter, I can use TinyURL.com and create a URL like this:

New Licensing Options:

We have changed our licensing adding another edition. Serv-U is now offered in 3 editions; Bronze, Silver, and Gold. These editions are designed to give you the best price-to-feature options to suite your particular needs. For a comparison chart of the new editions, please visit:

If you already have a Serv-U Home or Serv-U Corporate license, Serv-U will operate with the same feature-set as previous versions.
