05-05-2009 - Configuring Bandwidth Limits and Storing Users in a Database

Hello,

Welcome to another installment of the RhinoSoft.com newsletter. You are getting this newsletter because you signed up on our web site. If you would like to stop receiving these newsletters, please visit: http://www.RhinoSoft.com/newsletter/unsubscribe.asp

The intent of this newsletter is to give you some pointers on our products. This newsletter covers configuring limits on user bandwidth and storing users in a database in Serv-U.

Feature Spotlight - Bandwidth Limitations

In most corporate networks, bandwidth is plentiful but still not an unlimited resource. Without management of services it is easy for one application to consume more bandwidth than its share, inevitably generating problems ranging from complaints ("slow speed" reports from users) to major operational issues (backups not being completed on time). Since file transfers can be large and are utilized by many people simultaneously it is easy for users to saturate a network with excessive transfers without even realizing it.

If you wish to cut down on traffic saturation (or head it off before it becomes a concern) check out the "Limits and Settings" menu in Serv-U. It exists in the Server level, Domain level, Group level and User level, and settings are inherited downward in that order. Limit bandwidth for the entire Serv-U server using the "Maximum upload/download speed for server" limits at the server level, or limit a Serv-U Domain with the "Maximum upload/download speed for domain" limits. Set User-level limits for users who should have even lower consumption or allow administrators unlimited bandwidth by overriding inherited limits at the user level. Serv-U will allow you to allocate bandwidth exactly as required by your network environment.

Feature Spotlight - Database Support

It is easy to overlook, but Serv-U Gold's database support can greatly simplify user administration by allowing admins to store their user lists in databases such as MySQL, MS SQL and Oracle. Rather than manage users locally in Serv-U, integrate Serv-U with the database systems you already trust to hold and manage your user information. Serv-U 8 allows you to move your user accounts directly into an ODBC database and once they are imported you can manage changes to your accounts automatically by adding support for Serv-U's database in your existing account provisioning system. Get started using the KB articles linked below to manage your accounts simply in a database!
