10-27-2009 - Serv-U Events with Public SMTP Servers

Hello,

Welcome to another installment of the RhinoSoft.com newsletter. You are getting this newsletter because you signed up on our web site. If you would like to stop receiving these newsletters, please visit: http://www.RhinoSoft.com/newsletter/unsubscribe.asp

The intent of this newsletter is to give you some pointers on our products. This newsletter highlights a few of the great new features we've added in the recently released Serv-U 9.0.

Serv-U Events with Public SMTP Servers

A very useful feature of Serv-U has been expanded to allow administrators to leverage the public SMTP servers that are available today. Since I use Serv-U at home as my personal File Server, I don't have the convenience of using a corporate SMTP server. Now, I have the option of using a public SMTP server to deliver any email that could be dispatched from Serv-U.

To set this up in Serv-U, use the Management Console to navigate to "Server Details | Create, modify, and delete server events." Click on the "Configure SMTP..." button that is located in the lower-left corner of the page. Fill in the dialog with the public SMTP server information you would like to use. One popular choice for this feature might be Google's Gmail or any other publicly available email service that allows direct SMTP access.

NOTE: Some SMTP servers require that all incoming connections be encrypted to protect against possible eavesdropping. If your server requires incoming SMTP connections to be encrypted, enable the option labeled "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)". The default port for encrypted SMTP connections is 465.

Once the SMTP Configuration dialog is filled in, click OK. Now you can setup events for email. The most common events I use for email is when a user connects and disconnects to my home server. This is useful in determining who the most common users of my home server are and when they connect.

If you would like to change the notification delivery for an event, navigate to the appropriate Events Page (Domain or Server). Click on the event you would like to change, then the "Edit" button. Change the Event Action to "Send Email" and fill in the destination email address. Once all information is supplied to the dialog, click "Save" and you're done. Whenever this event is triggered, the email recipient receives an email with the configured event message.

Serv-U Multiple Email Recipients and BCC

Setting up emails for events leads us into two other new features of Serv-U 9.0. We've added the ability to send emails to multiple recipients and specifying BCC (Blind Carbon Copy) recipients to all the SMTP configuration dialogs.

Sending out emails to multiple recipients is very useful. For instance, if you have multiple Server and/or Domain administrators, it may be advantageous to send out an email to all administrators when the server is stopped for any reason.

Recipients listed under the BCC field receive a copy of the email message without revealing that they received the message to the other recipients. When sending out messages to a large number of email addresses, it's considered common courtesy to not share the address of each recipient with one another. Instead, send the message to yourself and place the rest of the intended recipients in the BCC field. Your friends and colleagues will thank you!

You can even specify a Group as the recipient. In this special case, Serv-U sends the event message to all accounts with a valid email address that are members of the Group. To specify a Group as the target of an email, click the "group envelope" button next to the "To" or "BCC" field.

Serv-U Statistics

Serv-U 9.0 introduces new login statistics for the Server, Domain, Group, and User. These include: number of logins, number of logouts, current logins, most concurrent logins, last login time, last logout time, average login time, longest login duration, and shortest login duration. These new statistics provide administrators a broader perspective of how Serv-U is being used. Administrators can save these statistics to a file for later review or they can see live results from the User & Group Statistics page of the Management Console.

To view the live statistics for a Group or User, use the Management Console to navigate to either the Server or Domain's "User & Group Statistics" page. You can view live results for an entire Group or an individual User.
