The intent of this newsletter is to give you some pointers on our products. This newsletter highlights an often-overlooked feature of our FTP Voyager file transfer client.
Filters In FTP Voyager
FTP Voyager is the most powerful FTP client available today, helping web administrators leverage the power of the Internet to administer their web sites easily and efficiently, minimizing the amount of work necessary through features like directory synchronization, the FTP Voyager Scheduler, Power Upload / Power Download, and Filters.
FTP Voyager Filters are the best way to visually represent the files and directories relevant to any given task. Through the use of filters, web developers can cleverly select only the files they work with for display, at once reducing the chance of accidentally moving or deleting other important files and also placing the files at hand in easy view.
Using "Include" Filters
"Include" filters are a quick way of cutting directly to only the files that must be displayed in the Local or Remote Panes. When an "Include" filter is used, only the files matching the filter are listed, allowing a rapid selection of a few or more file types to display. To configure an "Include" filter, right click in the Remote Pane on any file and select "Filter" (or select "Filter" from the Tools menu).
Filters are entered in the format "file.fid", with the ?, *, and [] operators accepted for the type of file you wish to "Include":
*.html - "Include" all files ending in .html (like default.html) *.??? - "Include" all files that "Include" a three letter extension (like index.asp or banner.php) indexpage[01234567890].html - "Include" all files that start with "indexpage" followed by an integer 0-9 and then .html
When configuring "Include" filters, all other files not matching the filter are not displayed, so "Include" filters are best when you know exactly which files you will be handling for a given site. For example, a web developer might know that they only expect to handle files of types "html", "php", and "png" so it is easy to configure an "Include" filter to only show these files.
Using "Exclude" Filters
"Exclude" filters operate similarly to "Include" filters but in the opposite fashion. Whereas "Include" filters show only the files included, "Exclude" filters only remove the file types specified files from the listings. For example, a developer who is not responsible for managing databases stored on a web server in .db format could configure a rule, "*.db", in the "Exclude" tab to remove all .db files from the listings and avoid scrolling past thees files or possibly accidentally moving or changing the files while managing the server.
