06-08-2010 - Events, Parameters, and SMS Notifications in Serv-U Gold
Hello,
Welcome to another installment of the RhinoSoft.com newsletter. You are getting this newsletter because you signed up on our web site. If you would like to stop receiving these newsletters, please visit: http://www.RhinoSoft.com/newsletter/unsubscribe.asp
The intent of this newsletter is to give you some pointers on our products. This newsletter covers the extensibility of Serv-U's Event system for maintaining awareness of server status and function.
Events in Serv-U Gold
Serv-U Gold expands on extensive domain logging functionality of Serv-U by allowing administrators to trigger actions in Serv-U based on a wide range of events, including: server start/stop, successful/failed file transfers, file/directory renames, user lockouts, and more. Any important event in Serv-U has an associated event which allows the administrator even greater control over managed file transfer in the enterprise.
Serv-U supports three different types of Actions for any given event. At a basic level, Balloon Tip notifications provide graphical notification of events from the Serv-U Tray when logged on to the server directly. Balloon Tip notifications are typically reserved for events like "Server Start", "Server Stopped", and "File Transfer Failed" - events which occur rarely but are important to be aware of.
Email and Execute Command Events
Serv-U also supports email events for notification by email. To enable Email Events, use the "Configure SMTP" button in the Events menu to specify the settings for your email server. Once these settings are entered, the "Send Email" action can be utilized to send updates to any email address required. Email events can be used for any event, just like Balloon Tip notifications. Email events provide an always-on line of communication with your Serv-U server when file transfer is a mission-critical part of your enterprise.
Serv-U can even go further and execute your desired program for you when an event occurs. For example, if you normally run a utility to compress files that your users upload, why not automate the process? By writing a batch file to do the task for you, then configuring the batch file to run on the "User Logoff" event, you can have Serv-U take responsibility of the task and save your time for more important work.
Parameters to Power Your Events
The information one administrator requires to remain informed about their network may be completely different than what another requires. Because of this, all Serv-U Events support an extensive set of macros that can be used in the text of any related event to provide critical insight into business processes. The full list is available in the Serv-U Help Files in the "Additional Reference" menu, and provides a view into every nook and cranny of your server functionality so that you can properly evaluate each email. These variables include, but are certainly not limited to:
$DomainKBup - The total number of kilobytes uploaded$DomainKBdown - The total number of kilobytes downloaded
$DomainFilesUp - The total number of files uploaded
$UserKBUp - The total number of kilobytes uploaded
$UserKBDown - The total number of kilobytes downloaded
$TransferBytesPerSecond - The effective (compressed) transfer rate in bytes/s
$TransferKBPerSecond - The effective (compressed) transfer rate in KB/s
$TransferBytes - The effective (compressed) number of bytes transferred, formatted for display, e.g., 32,164
These variables can also be tied into "Execute Command" events, passing in critical parameters to your program at runtime.
SMS Notifications
If your needs extend to mobile notifications of Serv-U events, a framework already exists to allow you to receive updates while on the go. Most major cellular providers issue all users an Email-To-SMS address that allows them to receive SMS messages by email with little effort. Some major cell providers are listed below - if your cell provider is not listed, their phone support representatives can provide this information.
