07-15-2010 - Reinforcing Your Brand With Serv-U

Hello,

Welcome to another installment of the RhinoSoft.com newsletter. You are getting this newsletter because you signed up on our web site. If you would like to stop receiving these newsletters, please visit: http://www.RhinoSoft.com/newsletter/unsubscribe.asp

The intent of this newsletter is to give you some pointers on our products. This newsletter covers ways to custom brand Serv-U with your company's information.

Reinforcing Your Brand With Serv-U

As any business owner knows, a company name is more than just a name - it carries with the brand, trust, and reputation that the company has earned over time with its customers and business associates. Just as the brand is strengthened by a strong business history, it is also reinforced through consistent usage throughout business communications and corporate IT systems, particularly customer-facing systems.

We at RhinoSoft.com understand the goal of branding and so have consistently reinforced Serv-U with new ways of customizing the user experience. This provides more ways for IT administrators to support their company's mission and to strengthen all uses of the brand throughout.

Branding Via HTTP

Serv-U 10 supports great depth of customization in the HTTP login interface that is used by the Serv-U Web Client as well as the FTP Voyager JV file transfer add-on client. With the version 10 release in May of this year, the HTTP interface can now be customized in the following ways:

  • Replace the main Serv-U logo with any 400x100 image of your choosing
  • Customize the browser title of the page with your company's name
  • Add custom text to the HTTP interface, including HTML formatted text

Our skilled developers have added these features in such a way that no knowledge of programming is required to add these elements of flair to your copy of Serv-U. Instead, they can be added via the Management Console in the "Domain Limits & Settings | Settings" menu, ensuring the reliability of the server while allowing you to make your Serv-U server truly yours.

Customizing Messages

Serv-U also allows you to set custom welcome messages and FTP response codes to suit your needs. This provides a more personal touch for users that can be changed any time a special message needs to be sent to customers.

Setting Welcome Messages for HTTP/HTTPS login can be accomplished by using the "Welcome Message" tab in each user account, or in the Group Properties for a group of users. A text file can be used or the message can be typed directly into the Serv-U Management Console.

Welcome Messages for FTP/FTPS users can be configured in the "Server Limits & Settings | FTP Settings" menu via "Global Properties | Message File", using a text file. The contents of the text file are then broadcast to FTP users when they connect to the Serv-U File Server.

Custom Directory Change Messages

In addition to custom Welcome Messages, Serv-U supports custom directory change messages that can be tied to any directory. These messages are commonly used when a user navigates to a directory that contains highly sensitive or critical files. To quickly and easily set up custom directory change messages that apply uniformly to all users, open the "Domain Limits & Settings | Limits" menu, then open the "Directory Listing" category. Add a new Limit ("Message file path") and use a relative path like "mymessage.txt".

Once this limit is saved, you can then create on the server a file called "mymessage.txt" in any directory that should have a custom directory change message, and if the file is named mymessage.txt Serv-U uses the contents of the file for the directory change message.

This file can even be hidden from users so that the users do not see the message file, but the file can be listed. This is done by adding a "Domain" level Directory Access rule that uses a similar "relative path". To do this, in the "Directories" menu, add a rule like this:

Path: "mymessage.txt" Permissions: Read (No other permissions, no List)

This hides the file from listings, but allows all users to use the file for the message.

Custom Support Links

The Serv-U Web Client and FTP Voyager JV both include support links to the help files, but not to any particular helpdesk. Administrators can easily replace this target with their own helpdesk location, email address, or any other protocol supported on their system. Examples include:

http://www.yourcompany.com/helpdesk
mailto:admin@yourcompany.com?subject=FTP Server Support
aim:goim?screenname=yourcompanylivesupport&message=I need assistance with the FTP server

The Client Support Link option can be set in the "Domain Limits & Settings | Settings" menu in the Serv-U Management Console.
